Where Did All the Technicians Go?

The Diesel Dilemma Dealerships Can’t Ignore

Let’s talk about one of the biggest headaches in the dealership world right now—and no, it’s not late deliveries or warranty claims.

It’s finding someone to turn a wrench.

The diesel technician shortage is very real, and it’s putting pressure on service bays everywhere. While trucks are getting more advanced, the techs needed to fix them are getting harder to find. Dealerships are feeling it. Customers are feeling it. And the industry is trying to keep its cool while turnaround times get longer and shop stress gets higher.

So… What’s Going On?

1. The Silver Wrench Generation is Retiring: Many of today’s top techs have been in the game for decades—but they’re now hanging up the coveralls and heading for retirement. And while they ride off into the sunset (well deserved), there aren’t enough young techs stepping in to fill the gap.

2. Diesel Isn’t “Cool” Anymore (to Gen Z): Let’s be honest—when kids today dream of high-tech careers, they’re thinking apps and AI, not air brakes and aftertreatment systems. Skilled trades just aren’t getting the love they deserve, and that’s hurting recruitment.

3. Training Takes Time—And Money: Even when someone shows interest, training a diesel tech for modern trucks isn’t cheap or quick. It’s a big investment. With electric drivetrains and advanced diagnostics entering the mix, the learning curve is only getting steeper.

4. Everyone’s Competing for the Same People: Truck dealerships aren’t alone. Fleets, independent shops, even construction companies—they’re all fishing in the same talent pool. And when there aren’t enough fish? The bidding wars begin.

What Can Dealerships Do?

  • Grow Your Own: Start training programs, apprenticeships, and high school outreach. The earlier you spark interest, the better.

  • Make It a Career, Not Just a Job: Offer growth paths, certifications, and benefits that make techs want to stay.

  • Create a Modern, Respectful Shop Culture: Techs want good tools, clean workspaces, and to feel valued—not just overworked.

The technician shortage isn’t going away tomorrow. But dealerships that treat techs like the backbone of their business (because they are!) will win in the long run. It’s time to invest, innovate, and maybe even let your techs pick the shop playlist once in a while.
